Life-changing impact: Eosta's Living Wage projects

In many African countries, the official minimum wage is definitely not enough to make ends meet.  Not even for the most basic necessities of life such as food and a roof over one's head. Let alone to be able to pay for medical expenses, send children to school and put money aside for unexpected events. 

A Living Wage is a wage where these costs are covered. So that families can live a decent life on the wage earned by the breadwinner. 

For Eosta, after a pilot in 2018, reason to set up Living Wage projects in 2020 for organic mango growers/processors of Fruiteq in Burkino Faso and organic avocado growers/processors of Mavuno and Fair Trade Enterprise in Kenya. 

With the aim of closing the gap between a minimum wage and a decent wage. A Living Wage-inclusive price premium of just 10 cents per kilo of mangoes, provides a Living Wage for Fruiteq's workers. For avocados, a Living Wage surplus of just 2 cents per kilo applies.  

Living Wage in practice 

Thanks to the Living Wage premium, for example, the wife of one of Mavuno's avocado growers was able to receive hospital treatment for cancer. Something that would not have been possible otherwise. And her husband and child would probably have had to manage on their own. 

From October 2023, Fair Trade Enterprise's workers in Kenya have received a structural wage increase of as much as 41%. And they have free health insurance. Thanks to Living Wage contributions from avocado sales.
